Avenue Road House Extension

We were engaged to design an extension to a family home in order to provide additional space and modern amenitiy for the young growing family. The site is a narrow block on Avenue Road with an existing three bedroom 1890s workers cottage. In the 1980s a timber clad extension was added on the eastern side of the existing building, away from the road. Our proposal is to demolish that extension replacing it with a two storey "add o"n that will accommodate a new open plan kitchen/dining/living area, which will face the back garden. The first floor will include a master bedroom, study and bathroom area, taking advantage of views over rooftops of the surrounding Camberwell suburb.

The site is under 500sqm and as such requires planning approval. In addition to that it sits within a heritage overlay and potential flood plain zone. Our strategy for the design was to treat the new extension as a separate pavilion building with a connection below the existing roof line, so as not to impact on the visual strength of the original cottage. The new extension can then be addressed as a separate building in terms of asthetic composition, and raising the floor level to allow for overland stormwater flow.
